The "babycells" Collection Kit

The Procedure

•  Immediately after birth, clamp the umbilical cord as close to the baby's abdomen as possible. Use two clamps.

2. Cut the umbilical cord between the two clamps and remove the baby from the sterile environment.

3. Before the delivery of the placenta, disinfect the umbilical cord at the point where the needle will be inserted. Use the alcohol tissues. A sterile environment is a must.

4. Take the sterile blood bag out of its packaging and place it nearby.

5. Insert the needle (attached to the sterile blood bag) in the disinfected part of the umbilical cord.

6. Fill the bag to capacity if possible (the bag can contain 250ml). Please ensure that a minimum of 80ml of blood is collected in the bag (excl. 35ml CPD-anticoagulant).

7. It may be necessary to draw blood from several places in the umbilical cord. Please ensure that these places have been properly sterilised beforehand.

8. After the collection bag is filled, squirt the blood through the tube into the bag.

9. Tie at least two security knots in the collection tube to prevent leakage during transportation (do not use sutures for this). You can also use the attached clamp (white).

10. Cut the needle from the bag and dispose it of appropriately and in accordance with hospital waste disposal regulations.

11. Turn the bag over slowly several times, in order to mix the cord blood with the CPD anticoagulant.

12. The collected cord blood must be kept at room temperature; it must not be placed in a refrigerator or freezer.

Note: In case of twins, the entire process must be repeated, using a separate collection kit for each child.
